[Class 82 (ii)] Scale is removed from tin bars prior to hot rolling by passing the bars successively between upper and lower feed rolls, spray pipes, emery wheels, conveyer rolls, spray pipes, wire brushes, and delivery rolls, the whole assembly being disposed in a framework which acts as a tank to collect the water from the sprays. The wire brushes may be brush rolls or flat brushes which are yieldingly mounted. The bars are fed from an inclined table 11, having side guides 12 and a stop device 13, through an opening 2 in a tanklike frame 1 and are carried through the cleaning machine by feed rolls 4<a>, conveyer rolls 4<c>, and delivery rolls 4b, the rolls being made of steel and fluted. On leaving the feed rolls 4<a>, the bars pass between water sprays 6 and then between emery wheels 5, each of which preferably comprises a plurality of emery discs mounted on a non-circular shaft 5b. They are then passed by the rolls 4<c> between water sprays 8 and then between rotary wire brushes 7 or yieldingly mounted flat brushes 15<c>, Fig. 6, to the delivery rolls 4b which pass them through an opening 3 in the frame on to a table 14. The rolls are all preferably fitted in spring-pressed bearings and the tank 1 is provided with one or more removable plates 1<a> to facilitate cleaning.
