433,638. Echo-sounding and distancemeasuring apparatus. WOOD, A. B., and McGEACHY, J. A., Admiralty Research Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex, and DRYSDALE, C. V., Admiralty, London. Feb. 20, 1934, No. 5573. [Class 118 (ii)] [See also Group XL] In indicating or recording apparatus for echosounding and distance - measuring operated directly from a gas discharge valve, means operated in synchronism with a moving part of the recorder are provided to control the relative periods of time during which the anode is connected to the recorder. The Figure shows an arrangement in which a switch member 29 connects the condenser 4 over resistance 3 to the high tension supply 1 immediately after the transmitter has functioned and breaks the circuit at intervals. In a modification, Fig. 2, (not shown) a commutator is inserted in the high tension supply which is interrupted at a frequency dependent on the speed of a moving part of the recorder. The recorder may be of the electro-chemical type as described in Specification 375,375 or of the self-marking type or of the type using an inked thread associated with an electromagnetic marker.
