Abstract

768,550. Counting-apparatus; electric digital data-storage apparatus. ERICSSON TELEPHONES, Ltd., and BURNETT, L. C. Dec. 29, 1954 [Sept. 29, 1953], No. 26693/53. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XL (c)] In counting-apparatus, input pulses are applied to a first multi-gap discharge tube and pulses are applied from an independent pulse source through a gate circuit to a second multigap discharge tube, each cathode of which is connected to a corresponding cathode of the first tube, only when the discharges in the two tubes pass to unconnected cathodes. Each pulse passed by the gate circuit is applied also to a counter which, according to the Provisional Specification, may be as described in Specification 712,171. For counting random pulses from several sources, e.g. turnstiles, each source, e.g. 12, Fig. 1, is connected to a first tube 10 associated with a second tube 11 to which pulses are applied from a gate 15 controlled by coincidence - detecting arrangements 14 and the several gates 15 are pulsed sequentially by a thermionic or commutator distributer 17 supplied from a source 16. The outputs of the gates 15 are connected over isolating diodes to the counter 20. At each source, the input and gated pulses respectively are applied to the first and second tubes CTA, CTB by 'drive circuits 23, 24 and, for detecting, coincidence of registration in the two tubes, the anode potential of the first is modulated from a high-frequency source IS1. When coincidence occurs, this modulation is passed to the anode of the second tube, by virtue of the connected cathodes and is applied via GA to a valve VC, Fig. 3, having an anode circuit tuned to the modulation frequency. The coincidence signal is then rectified and applied to a pentode gate VD to which are also applied the pulses from the distributer IS3, 17. The pentode gate thus passes the latter pulses only in the absence of coincidence. While the discharge in either tube of a pair passes to a guide electrode, the drop in the cathode potential via GB biases off the gate pentode VD. The output pulses are shaped by a monostable multivibrator VE and applied via GC to the second tube CTB and over a diode W4 to the total counter. Specification 712,215, [Group XL (a)], also is referred to.
