Abstract
Chlorinated rubber products of improved stability are obtained by precipitating solid chlorinated rubber from solutions thereof by addition of methyl alcohol, separating the precipitated solid and bringing it into intimate contact with a further quantity of methyl alcohol. The precipitated solid may be redissolved and reprecipitated by methyl alcohol one or more times prior to the final washing with methyl alcohol. In an example a solution of rubber in carbon tetrachloride is chlorinated, the resulting solution is treated with a basic substance such as soda ash and filtered to removed solid matter, solid chlorinated rubber is then separated from the solution as above. Films of chlorinated rubber may be obtained by evaporation of solutions of the chlorinated rubber obtained as above in solvents such as benzene in which is incorporated a plasticizing agent e.g. up to 33 per cent dibutyl phthalate of the weight of chlorinated rubber.
