433,097. Variable speed gearing. NEWTON, N. B., Newton & Bennett Works, Valetta Road, Acton, London. March 29, 1934, No. 23508. Divided out of 422,423. [Class 80 (ii)] A power-transmission system comprises in combination an automatic centrifugal friction clutch a, having a voluntary control pedal c, and a change-speed gear b, having frictional or other progressive ratio-selecting and driveproviding means such as brakes or clutches. The clutch a may be that described in Specification 401,889. As shown, the gear b is the Wilson gear described in Specifications 164,042 and 328,660, [both in Class 80 (ii)], having brake-bands operated by a lever g under control of preselector mechanism, (not shown). The lever g has a pin-and-slot connection i with the clutch-pedal c, so that the clutch disengages before the gear is changed. In a clutch-operated change-speed gear the selecting clutches may comprise expanding friction cones moved by hydraulic pressure. Selection may alternatively be effected by controlled hydraulic plungers engaging a cam. The hydraulic distributing- valve controlling such gears may be interconnected with the clutch-pedal c.
