Abstract

A sealing composition for containers comprises an alkali silicate, alkaline earth silicate-or organic silicate in solution or dispersion in an aqueous system, one or more turgescent materials of a colloidal character, and an organic hygroscopic substance. In an example, a solution of methyl cellulose in water is mixed with sodium silicate, wheat flour, and iron oxide, heated and then cooled. There are then added calcium chloride solution, glycerol and ammonia, and the product is homogenized. The turgescent material may be water soluble cellulose derivatives such as methyl or ethyl cellulose, or aqueous suspensions of water insoluble cellulose derivatives such as esters prepared by the addition of an acetone solution of the ester to water. The hygroscopic substance may be polyhydric alcohols or their derivatives, such as glycol, glycerol, diethylene glycol. Natural or synthetic resins and fillers such as kaolin and diatomaceous earths may be added.ALSO:A sealing composition for containers comprises an alkali silicate, alkaline earth silicate, or organic silicate in solution or dispersion in an aqueous system, one or more turgescent materials of a colloidal character, and an organic hydroscopic substance. In an example 4 1/2 gallons of water, 24 lbs. of sodium silicate and 16 lbs. of wheat flour are whisked together, heated for 15 minutes at 90 DEG C. and cooled. Then 5 pints of strong ammonia, 7 lbs. of glycerol and 3 lbs. of iron oxide, dispersed in 4 pints of water with sodium oleate, are mixed in and the product is homogenized. Other examples are given. The turgescent material may be starches and flours, such as cornflour, rice, sago, or protein matter such as gluten, casein, albumen, or hydrophilic colloids such as agar agar, Irish moss, or water soluble cellulose derivatives such as methyl or ethyl cellulose, or aqueous suspensions of water insoluble cellulose derivatives such as esters prepared by the addition of an acetone solution of the ester to water. The hygroscopic substance may be polyhydric alcohols or their derivatives, such as glycol, glycerol, diethylene glycol. Natural or synthetic resins and fillers such as kaolin and diatomaceous earths may be added.
