Abstract

432,479. Beams ; floors. BATES, H. K., 9, Allerton Road, Liverpool. Dec. 19, 1933, No. 35683. [Class 20 (iv)] A reinforced - concrete H-beam comprising a comparatively thick top flange A, a lighter bottom flange B, and a web C carrying reinforcing members F, is provided with the longitudinal edges of its top flange A so shaped as to form a tongue and grooved or rabbeted joint with adjacent similar beams wherein the tongues and grooves or recesses are discontinuous and alternately disposed along each longitudinal edge of the top flange. By this arrangement, the projections of one beam enter the grooves or recesses of the adjacent beam and relative vertical and horizontal movement between the beams is prevented. The longitudinal edges of the bottom flange B may be formed similarly to the top flange A. The beam shown in Figs. 2 and 4 is provided with spaced tongues G and grooves H between the tongues, and such formations may be arranged either beneath the upper face of the beam as shown in Fig. 2 to provide a straight joint line in the surface of the top flange, or at the upper face of the beam as shown in Fig. 2A to produce a zig-zag joint line. The upper edges of adjacent beams are spaced as at a<3>, Fig. 4, for the reception of grout. The sides of the tongues are convergent outwardly as shown in Fig. 2. The beam may be provided with transverse ribs E, D at the ends and intermediately, and openings K may be arranged in such ribs for the passage of conduits, cables, &c. The web C may be formed with openings L for the same purpose, and with additional openings to lighten the beam. Both the flanges A, B and the ribs D, E decrease in thickness from the web outwardly. Each of the side portions of the bottom flange B may have projecting wires for attaching metal lathing across the joints between the beams.
