Abstract

432,253. Building - foundations. RODIO, G., 14, Corso Venezia, Milan, Italy. Jan. 2, 1935, No. 179. Convention date, Jan. 16, 1934. Drawings to Specification. [Class 20 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVI] Clayey soil is hardened by passage of an electric current from an electrode of aluminium to an electrode of copper, iron or other metal, preferably a metal widely separated from aluminium in the electro-chemical series. The current, for example of 220-400 volts, may be generated by an external source, or may be excited by external short-circuiting of the electrodes. The hardening is further promoted by introduction into the soil of a suitable chemical agent such as aluminium acetate or aluminium sulphate, particularly in the neighbourhood of the aluminium electrode. The action is stated to be due to the replacement of sodium or other kations at the surface of the clay particles by hydrogen or aluminium. In an example, the electrodes employed consist of an aluminium plate and a hollow perforated wooden body of square section, coated with perforated copper sheet.
