Process for the production of glow discharge tubes for the purpose of keeping the voltage constant For the purposes of keeping the voltage constant with the help of glow discharge tubes, the operating conditions of the tube are known to be chosen so that the discharge burns in the area of normal cathode fall or at least only with slightly above normal current density. The level of the stabilized voltage then only depends on the gas filling and the cathode material. It is known to activate the cathode with barium azide in order to obtain operating voltages of about; 7o V. During the heating process during the manufacture of the tubes. the barium azide is converted into very finely divided metallic barium. The operating voltage achieved in this way is around 70 V. For various purposes, however, it is desirable to achieve a higher operating voltage of, for example, 100 V, e.g. B. when the normalized ioo-V batteries in communications equipment are to be replaced by power supply units with glow discharge tubes to keep the voltage constant. Burning voltages of this kind have already been achieved through the use of magnesium as an activating agent, but because of the strong atomization it is only suitable for low cathode loads. Also, it's difficult to get the magnesium out completely. To be introduced into the tubes without oxides: The method for the production of glow discharge tubes for the purpose of maintaining a constant voltage according to the invention consists in that the cathode is first coated with alkaline earth azide, then the alkaline earth azide is converted into alkaline earth metal and finally the finely divided alkaline earth metal is sintered together.
in sehr fein verteilter poröser Form.
The method according to the invention is also based on the known method
Activation by means of alkaline earth, e.g. B. from barium azide assumed. In the following
the procedure is described using the example of barium. The same is known in
Way to the z. B. made of sheet iron and applied in a vacuum
converted into barium when the tubes were heated to around 400 ° C. The barium arises
in a very finely divided porous form. By sintering together according to the invention
the barium is brought into a denser form. This is done through a special
Heating of the cathode to a temperature at which the barium as a result of surface migration
sintered together without evaporating substantial amounts of the barium.
The cathode can be heated in one of the known ways,
z. B. by a brought over the tube, traversed by high frequency current coil
or by a gas discharge in the tube itself or also, e.g. B. at '. \ L ° tallröliren,
by heating the discharge vessel directly to the required temperature. The tubes
show, as could be proven by experiments, after this treatment and after
Filling with the usual mixture of the rare gases neon-helium the desired burning voltage
of ioo V. If other gas fillings are used, other burning voltages
can be achieved. The invention can also be used with alkaline earth metals other than barium
be performed. Various other burning voltages can also be used in this way
than ioo V can be achieved with the few suitable noble gases available.
