Abstract

Water-soluble azo dyes are made by coupling a diazotized 2 : 4-dinitroaniline not carrying chlorine or bromine in the 6-position, or diazotized 2 : 4-dinitro-a -naphthylamine with an N-isobutyl- or N-n-butyl-N-sulphatoalkyl derivative of a p-coupling amine of the benzene series. They are suitable for colouring acetate artificial silk, silk, wool and leather in reddish-violet to bluish-violet shades. The following dyes are described in examples: (1)--(2) 2 : 4-dinitroaniline --> N - n - butylsulphatoethylaniline or m-toluidine; (3) 2 : 4-dinitro-a -naphthylamine --> N - n - butylsulphatoethylaniline. Other components specified are 6-methyl- and 6-methoxy-2 : 4-dinitroaniline. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the dyestuff: 2 : 4-dinitroaniline --> N-isobutyl-N-sulphatoethyl-3-amino-4-methoxytoluene. Specifications 181,750, 237,739, [both in Class 2 (iii)], and 430,079 are referred to. N-butylsulphatoalkylanilines referred to in the above examples are made by condensing the hydroxy alkylaniline with the butyl halide and treating the product with chlorsulphonic acid. The intermediate used in preparation of the sample is made by reacting 3-amino-4-methoxytoluene with isobutyl bromide, condensing the product with ethylene chlorhydrin and finally treating with chlorsulphonic acid.
