Abstract

Monoazo dyes for the colouring of acetate artificial silk are made by coupling a diazotized p-nitroamine of the benzene or naphthalene series, free from COOH and SO3H groups, with a compound or mixture of compounds of the formula <FORM:0434126/IV/1> where Ar is a phenyl residue free from COOH and SO3H groups and having an unsubstituted p-coupling position to the N, R=methyl, ethyl, b - hydroxyethyl or --CH2--CH2--[O--CH2--CH2]n<1>--OH, n and n<1> being integers greater than zero, such that n+n<1> does not exceed 10 and preferably does not exceed 4. They may be converted into dispersible dyestuff powders by means of known dispersing agents, e.g. those of Specification 224,077, [Class 2 (iii)]. They may be used in admixture with other insoluble azo or anthraquinone dyestuffs. In examples, dyestuffs from the following components are described: 2 : 4-dinitroaniline, 6-chlor- or 6-bromo-2 : 4-dinitroaniline, 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline, p-nitroaniline, 2 : 4-dinitro-1-naphthylamine, 5 - nitro - 2 - anisidine, 2 : 6-dichloro- or 2 : 6-dibromo-4-nitroaniline; the products obtained by condensing various quantities of ethylene oxide with N-b -hydroxyethyl-m-toluidine, m-toluidine, N-ethylaniline and aniline. The coupling components may also be obtained by condensing a suitable amine with a mixture of ethylene chlorhydrin and caustic soda. Specification 421,117 also is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the coupling of a diazotized aniline or naphthylamine with components of the above type and specifies also aniline, o- and p-anisidine, chloranilines, 2 - chloro - 6 - bromo - 4 - nitroaniline, p-chlor-o-nitroaniline, 3 : 5-dinitro-2-anisidine or 2-toluidine, a - and b -naphthylamine, 5-nitro-2-aminophenol, o- and m-nitroaniline, p-phenetidine and toluidines.
