[Class 66] Kettles or other boiling vessels are arranged to give a warning sound, caused by agitation of the lid, upon boiling; the lid, which is weighted, rests freely upon but in close contact with an annular flat-surfaced seating 4 towards which the escaping steam is directed by an annular passage 7, a water film formed between the two parts being constantly broken by the steam pressure and re-formed by the falling of the lid. The spout is connected at or adjacent to the base of the vessel to ensure that the only outlet for the steam is by the channel 7. The lid may be free or may be loosely hinged to the vessel and the marginal edge resting on the seating may be flat, as in Fig. 7, or formed with a narrow flange 8, Fig. 5, so that an annular channel 10 is formed at the underside of the edge. It may be also provided with a hollow chamber 5, Fig. 7, into which steam can pass through an opening 18. In the case of hingeless lids, to prevent too much relative lateral movement between the lid and the seating, the outer edge of the lid or that of the seating may be provided respectively with a depending or upstanding flange or series of studs. In an electric kettle, as shown in Fig. 7, the opening 21 of the spout 2 may be disposed so as to prevent all the water from being poured out, to avoid burning out of the heating element 22.
