Abstract

431,295. Operating clutches ; controlling variable-speed gearing. FLEISCHEL, G., BlÚneau, Yonne, France. July 13, 1934, No. 20594. [Class 80 (ii)] A fluid-pressure or suction servomotor 1 for operating the clutch of a motor vehicle has two independent main control valves 8 and 8<1>, Fig. 1, for use when starting and when changing gear respectively, the valve 8 being associated with auxiliary means responsive to the reaction of the clutch so as to retard the engaging movement upon initial contact of the clutch parts. As shown in Fig. 1, the auxiliary means comprises a valve 11 controlling the atmospheric port 9, this valve being connected to a link 13 which interconnects the piston rod 4<1> of the servo and the clutch control rod 5. The valve 11 is urged towards closed position by a spring 12 and towards open position by the reaction. With the clutch disengaged, valve 11 is open. On operating the valve 8 to allow the clutch to engage, the first portion of the engaging stroke is relatively rapid, since valve 11 remains open, but upon initial contact of the clutch parts the valve 11 progressively closes, whereby the engaging movement is progressively retarded. Adjustable stops 14, 15 limit the movement of the valve 11. Where the gear box is controlled by a fluid servo 1<2>, having a main control valve 8<2>, an auxiliary control valve 11<2> is urged to closed position by a spring 12<2> and is adapted to be opened, so as to permit energization of the servo 1<2>, only when the clutch is fully disengaged, by the co-operation with the hooked end 39 of the rod 38 of the valve 11<2> with an abutment 40 on the link 13. As shown in Fig. 3, the cylinder of the servo 1 is itself movable in response to the reaction, against a spring 12<1>, the auxiliary valve 11 being fixed. As shown in Fig. 2, a separate auxiliary valve is dispensed with, the link 13 acting in one direction on the main valve 8, through an abutment 8a, to move it according to the reaction.
