Abstract

[Class 12 (i)] [See also Group XXXVIII] In a sound-film apparatus, particularly a combined sound - reproducing and kinematograph apparatus, in which the film drives a drum or roller 7 at or near the point of soundreproduction, the shaft 4 of the drum is mounted in a bearing 3 which is independently driven so as to reduce frictional opposition to the rotation of the drum. The construction shown comprises a spur wheel 1 driven by the picture projector, which gears with a pinion 2 on the journal bearing 3. The movement of the bearing is imparted through a freewheel coupling 5 to the shaft 4, which carries a flywheel 6. The gearing is such that when the drum shaft 4 is started, before the film moves, it is driven at a speed which is slightly less than that at which the film subsequently drives the drum. The drum 7 preferably contains the light-sensitive cell. Specification 314,001, [Class 40 (ii)], is referred to.
