Abstract
427,510. Cooling cylinders. BRITISH AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and FEDDEN, A. H. R., Filton House, Bristol. May 16, 1934, Nos. 14837 and 31241. [Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XXVI] An aircraft-engine cooling-fan, mounted on a plate 32 which forms its hub, is located between the propeller 10 and the engine and is rotated at a higher speed than the former. As shown it is driven through epicyclic gearing comprising one or more, (preferably three); planet wheels 26, rotatable on stub axles 25 carried by the propeller shaft, and engaging a fixed gear 27 on the casing 19 and a gear 29 on the plate 32 ; to increase the speed still further, the planet wheels may be compound pinions, the larger and smaller gears of each engaging the plate 32 and the casing. In Fig. 4 the planet wheels are replaced by lay shafts 39 rotating in fixed bearings and having gears 40, 41 engaging respectively, a gear 42, carried by the stub axles 16 of the epicyclic driving-gear of the propeller, and a gear 43 on the plate 32. The lay shafts may be arranged outside the casing 19 and be provided with individual telescopic tabular casings ; the gear 40 is then driven by a gear mounted on the engine shaft.
