[Class 82 (ii)] A jig washer for coal and the like is provided with means which as the depth of the refuse bed varies, automatically arrest or release the flow of refuse through a discharge opening and with separate means for retarding the flow of refuse outside the discharge opening when the flow has begun. In the form shown coal &c., is fed by a shoot 2 into a washer box 1 and is stratified by pulsations of water through a screen 3. Refuse passes through a discharge opening 4, adjustable by means of a sliding gate 5, on to a shelf 6, the flow of refuse through the opening 4 being arrested or released by a weir 7 pivoted at 8 and controlled through a relay mechanism by a float 9. The flow of refuse over the shelf 6 outside the discharge opening 4 is retarded by a flap 10 hinged at 11 which rests on the refuse, the free end of the flap being connected by a rod 12 to a pivoted lever 13 provided with a balance weight 15 so that the pressure of the flap of the refuse can be adjusted. The rod 12 passes through a tube 16 in the coal inlet shoot 2 and a bracket 17 on which the lever 13 is pivoted is fixed to the tube 16. The downward movement of the flap 10 is limited by a collar 18 on the rod 12 which engages the bracket 17 and the upward movement of the rod 12 is limited by the provision of an adjustable stop 19 carried by the bracket 17. Instead of the pivoted flap, an air chamber fitted with shifting valves may be used for controlling the movement of the refuse over the shelf and means other than the combination of a shelf and weir may be used to effect the arrest or release of the flow of refuse through the discharge opening.
