[Class 135] [See also Group XXXVII] Apparatus for operating a valve or electric switch after a predetermined time has lapsed comprises a spring 35 operatively connected to an actuating member 26 for operating, for example, the plug 15 of a cock 10, a clockwork timing mechanism 64, 63, 51, and a flexible and resilient detent 38, 44, 40, cooperating with teeth 45 on the actuating member 26 to prevent actuation until released by the timing mechanism. The detent mechanism is set and the spring 35 tensioned on opening the cock through the lug and slot engagement 30, 32, one end of the spring 35 being secured at 36 to the actuating member 26 and the other at 37 to the arm 38 of the detent mechanism which arm is pivoted at 39 on a floating link 40. The detent is released when the finger 43 of the arm 38 drops into a slot 50 in a timing wheel 47 and the teeth 45 are so shaped that the tension of spring 35 causes them to ride over the dog 44, thus allowing the actuating member 26 to operate to close the cock. The lug and slot engagement 30, 32, of the plug 15 with the member 26 allows adjustment of the valve without disturbing the timing mechanism. The predetermined time interval before operation is dependent upon the position of the finger 43 of the detent arm 38 with respect to the slot 50 in the timing wheel 47 which is adjusted by winding the spring 57 of the clockwork mechanism the requisite amount by means of a minute indicating wheel 68 which is further geared to an hour indicating wheel 69.
