Abstract

426,963. Directing vehicle lamps. GIBBS, B. J., 170, Tarring Road, Worthing. Oct. 12, 1933, No. 28227. [Class 75 (iii)] In means for swivelling a headlamp from the steering-gear in one direction of steering only, the lamp 1 is carried by a swivelling sleeve 7 connected by an arm 7<a> and a link 2b, or a toothed quadrant and rack, with a slidable bar 12 operated through flexible transmission means by a spring-pressed plunger 3 projecting from a support 4, fixed to the front axle 5, for engagement with a moving part of the front axle assembly, such as a brake cover 6, stub axle flange or steering arm. The plunger co-operates with a stop so that it is disengaged from the moving part in the opposite direction of steering or it may be constantly in engagement with the moving part and a lost motion connection provided. The support 4 comprises a lateral arm 4a, adjustable in a clamp 4b, and a tubular part 3<a>, which may be axially adjustable. The sleeve 7 is mounted on a bolt 9 adapted to engage the existing supporting lug 10<a> on a cross-bar 10 or other support and is provided with a removable and interchangeable cap 7d having a screwed bore 7<e> adapted to co-operate with the usual fixing means on the lamp body. The frame or the like 11 for the bar 12 is secured by a flange 11<a>, clamped between the lug 10<a> and a shoulder 9<b> on the bolt, and may be fitted with a casing 13<a> for an extension 13b of the bar 12 for simultaneous operation of two lamps. The plunger 3 may be connected with the bar 12 by a Bowden cable 2 or by a hydraulic transmission comprising pistons 3<g>, 12<e> in cylinders 4<f>, 11<g>, connected by a flexible pipe 2<e>. Clips or the like may be provided to hold the lamps in the fully swivelled position when driving in fog.
