Abstract
Carbides of hard metals, e.g. tungsten, titanium, chromium, and vanadium, for making sintered alloys, are obtained by heating the metal or its oxide with carbon in stages at successively increasing temperatures, and grinding finely between the stages. Specification 395,721 is referred to.ALSO:Carbides of hard metals, e.g. tungsten, titanium, chromium, and vanadium, for making sintered alloys, are obtained by heating the metal or its oxide with carbon in stages at successively increasing temperatures, and grinding finely between the stages. The metals of lower melting point, e.g. iron, nickel, or cobalt, employed to bind the carbides may be obtained by reduction in stages of the corresponding oxides with a high flow of reducing gas, e.g. hydrogen. The finely-divided carbide or carbides and metal or metals are mixed and ground together and sintered. Specification 395,721 is referred to.
