426,159. Ventilating footwear. HOWE, A., and CLARKE, J. H., (trading as CLARKE & CO., J. H.), Grovena Works, Grosvenor Street, Leicester. May 11, 1934, No. 14312. [Class 17 (ii)] A shoe with interior ventilation during wear has an insole with perforations to admit air into the interior of the shoe and imperforate sponge or cellular rubber material secured to its underside, either before or after lasting, and which, when subjected to asqueezing action under the weight of the wearer, will set up a pumping effect in the perforations. In one form, a filler 4 of sponge or like cellular rubber is stuck to an insole 1, at the forepart, or, if desired at one or more other parts also, or over the whole of the insole in such manner as to prevent moisture penetrating to the shoe interior. The insole 1 has perforations 2 arranged in rows or any desired way behind the sponge rubber for the passage of air, and a sock with perforations corresponding to those in the insole may be provided and stuck to the insole, e.g. by parallel streaks of adhesive so as to leave channels for the passage of air to additional perforations in the sock, e.g. at the waist. The sponge or cellular rubber has a skin on one or both faces which when provided on one face only is located away from the insole.
