Abstract
336,298. Radburne, J. W., and Patteson, A. July 12, 1929. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles. - In Veldtschoen the upper is secured to an insole by any suitable method, as by an adhesive, sewing, riveting, or bracing, and the outer margin of the upper is secured to the sole bv an adhesive. The insole may also be secured to the sole by an adhesive. If the upper is thick enough it may be split at the edges as at a<3>, a<4>, Fig. 5, and the inner edges a<3> may be secured to the insole c and the outer margins a<4> turned outwards and stuck to the sole d, as for example in the manner described in Specification 296,372. Rows of mock stitching e may be sewn on the edges a<4> of the upper prior to lasting. Alternatively, if the upper is thin, the edges b<1> of the lining b, Fig. 3, are turned in in similar manner to the edges a' in the previous construction, or as a further alternative, a thin strip of material may be attached in any convenient manner, as by stitching, to the edge of the upper for attachment to the insole, and these stitches may constitute the mock stitching above referred to, or, in the case of rubber or rubber composition soled footwear, a thin strip of rubber may be attached to the edges of the upper. Toe puffs and stiffeners and shanks may be positioned after the upper has been secured to the insole and retained in place by the adhesive used to secure the sole to the upper. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, if, in wear the lining tears or breaks, and the upper is sufficiently thick, it may be slit and repaired as shown in Fig. 5.
