Abstract

441,275. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., Belgrave Road, Leicester.-(United Shoe Machinery Corporation; Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A.) July 16, 1934, No. 20731. Addition to 355,332. [Class 17 (ii)] Connecting uppers to insoles and soles.- Various forms of thin and flexible insoles with ribs or lips for use in the method of shoemaking claimed in the parent Specification are described. In one form, shown in Fig. 1, the lip is formed separately from the insole 10 by attaching to the marginal portions of the insole, by a seam of stitches running along its mid-portion, a narrow strip of material 20, and subsequently turning up and securing its margins together by adhesive. The forepart of the insole is of thin flexible leather with shallow parallel transverse slashes 16 and the rear portion is reinforced by a layer of relatively inflexible material 12, such as fibreboard. In another construction, the forepart of the insole is of felt adhesively secured to a heel end portion of less flexible material. In a modification, a lip 34, Fig. 6, is formed by cutting a channel 32 round the forepart of an insole 30 of uniform flexibility throughout. This lip 32 is raised and a line of through- and-through stitching 36 is made along the base of the lip to assist in preventing it from splitting away from the body portion 30. In a further modification, Fig. 8, a narrow strip 40 is secured along one edge around the forepart of an insole 38 by a line of stitching 42 so that the strip is inclined inwardly relatively to the insole.
