Abstract

Ferrous metal articles, e.g. motor mountings, are coated with brass or other copper alloy by dipping and rubber is then bonded to the coated metal by applying a strip or sheet of unvulcanized rubber, with or without the use of a rubber cement, and subjecting the rubber to vulcanizing heat and pressure. Either before or after or both before and after the immersion of the ferrous metal article in the molten brass, &c., it is immersed in a bath of hot flux, e.g. molten boracic acid, having a temperature approximately equal to that of the coating metal. Any flux coating on the metal-coated article is removed either by chemical means, e.g. with hot water or acid, or mechanically by treatment with a steel brush prior to the bonding with rubber.
