Abstract

425,538. Hydraulic transmission of power. SALERNI, P. M., 23, Carlton House Terrace, St. James's, London. June 16, 1933, Nos. 17262/33, 18011/33, and 11472/34. [Class 69 (ii)] In hydraulic power transmission apparatus comprising an impeller, turbine, and reaction member, the reaction vanes are angularly movable to a liquid-deflecting position for power transmission at a torque ratio higher than 1 to 1, the reaction member being held stationary at this time, or to a position such that they do not cause any material deflection of the liquid, the reaction member then being free to rotate and the torque ratio being substantially 1 to 1. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the reaction vanes 16 are pivotally mounted on a member 15 by pins 17. The member 15 has inclined splines 15a, Fig. 2, engaging similar splines 22a in a ring 22, which is connected by pins 23 to the ends of rods 24 slidably fitted in holes in the pins 17, and is axially adjustable by means of a rod 39, plate 33, rods 34, and a ball race 35. The ring 22 also carries pawls 26 pivoted at 26a, Fig. 4, and acted on by springs 30 ; the pawls are adapted to engage notches 31 in a fixed ring 19, the walls 31<b> of the notches being higher than the walls 31<a>. When the ring 22 is in its extreme right position, the pawls have ridden up inclines 26<c> and are disengaged from the notches 31, so that the reaction member is free to rotate, the vanes 16 having been moved into the full line position of Fig. 2. Reverse movement of the ring 22 moves the vanes towards or to the dotted line position, and as the reaction member tends to rotate backwards the pawls engage the notches and lock it. The vanes 16 are shaped to assume the different positions within or upon a spherically shaped surface or surfaces, and the rod 39 may be governor-operated.
