Abstract

350,143. Clutches for conveying rotary motion. DUMBELL, J. B. and DUMBELL, P. B., of Wulfruna Works, Lever Street, Wolverhampton. April 17., 1930, No. 12162. [Class 80 (ii).] In a combined clutch more particularly for the transmission system of screw propeller driving mechanism wherein there is a first-intention friction clutch and a positive clutch element, the arrangement is characterized in that after the friction clutch has been engaged the positive clutch is subsequently engaged by endwise movement of the driven member under the action of the drive. The driven member may be held from endwise movement by a retaining device which is releasable either by hand or automatically. The driving shaft A carries one member E of a friction clutch and an extension C on the driven member B supports the other member d, D. The part E is provided with a number of forwardly projecting dogs e, and the forward extension C has at its forward end a number of dogs c. The engagement of the friction clutch is controlled by a hand-lever F and the action of the dog clutch is controlled by a. spring-pressed detent K. When the friction clutch is moved into engagement and the drive is taken up, the thrust of the propeller on the shaft B rises until at a definite time the catch detent is forced aside and the dogs take up the positive drive. Both clutches are disengagable by the lever F, the part D contacting with the shoulder C<SP>2> for moving the dogs c rearwardly. For hand control lever M, Fig. 3, is provided whereby the detent K may be raised clear of the collar C1 on the sleeve C. Instead of a detent, spring-pressed balls acting on a curved collar on the sleeve may be used.
