Abstract
425,120. Wedges. MOORE, M. S., Ivanhoe, Worcester Road, Malvern, Worcestershire. Sept. 5, 1933, Nos. 24626/33 and 17616/34. [Class 89 (ii)] [See also Group X] Supporting-bars or straps for mine roofs are supported in the adjustable headpieces of extensible props in such manner that the bars may be wedged up to working position without reducing the pressure on the props. The bodypart 4 of the adjustable head of the prop is of cruciform shape, Fig. 3, with inclined surfaces 6, 7 disposed at right-angles to each other, and the head comprises also side portions 5, 10, the latter of which act as guides on the upper end of the prop 1. The opening 9 through the headpiece may be closed at the top, or the upper ends of the sides may have plates 13 attached thereto so that internal flanges 12 are formed to receive a bearing-plate 14 for the transverse roof-supporting bar 11. The head of the prop is first forced against the roof by means of a wedge 3 inserted between the prop 1 and the body-part 4 of the head, and after the supporting-bar 11 has been positioned in the head, it is forced up to the plate 14 by a separate wedge 8, after which the usual packing 15 is inserted between the supporting-bar and the roof. In order to allow of various inclinations of the supporting-bar with respect to the prop, one of the faces of both the wedge 8 and bearing-plate 14 is curved.
