Abstract

424,801. Drying cereals &c. JACKSON, W. G., Uplands Hall, Uplands, near Preston. Dec. 13, 1933, No. 35024. [Class 34 (ii)] Apparatus for drying broken stone, ores, cereals, and like material comprises a hollow vertical structure round which drying compartments are located, the material falling through the compartments in succession and being dried by hot gases admitted at different levels, the gases escaping through the structure under the control of valves. Provision is made for diverting the directions of flow of the material to be dried. In the construction shown, a cylinder a fitted with a feed hopper b is provided with a central pipe structure c formed with enlargements each consisting of an inclined ledge c<1> and a flanged base plate c<2>. The cylinder a is provided with inclined ledges a<4> and horizontal ledges a<2>. The material falling from the hopper b takes a zig-zag downward path and is dried by hot gases entering the cylinder at e and passing to the drying chamber through an annular space el and through valves h. The gases pass through passageways a<5> to the material and hence through gaps c<3> to the central structure c which is provided with valves g controlling the upward flow of the gases to a fan or chimney. In a modification, the central structure has a cylindrical portion which is unbroken except for apertures fitted with valves. Enlargements similar to those shown in Fig. 1 are provided around the cylindrical portion.
