Abstract

529,901. Drying and treating cereals and granular material. GRONERT, A. June 10, 1939, No. 17090. [Class 34 (ii)] [Also in Group I] Granular material such as cereals or earth nuts are dried while falling in a vertical shaft so as to surround on all sides, i.e. above and below as well as laterally an internal casing with perforated walls containing a single fan m with suction and pressure. branches forcing hot gas through the grain and drawing in cold air at the grain outlet. The fan motor E may be in the casing below the fan on the suction side and be cooled by air drawn in at u. Cool air is drawn in at the bottom i but air drawn in near the centre passes over steam or other heaters h through the grain to the fan and hence passes out through heat-conducting tubes k, l or when these are closed through the grain at p. The tubes k, l may be open at their undersides for recirculation of air. Girders Z or staggered inverted V-shaped projections stir the grain. Combustion gases may enter a square shaft through inter-communicating triangular ducts at each corner. The internal casing may have a central baffle so that.hot air is drawn through the lower part and forced out through the upper part of the shaft. The wall of the casing carry ing alternate projections may be moved vertically to adjust the space between the projections for different materials. Material is discharged beneath a rotary, cone 8 below which rotary sweeps 9 convey it inwardly and downwardly to the outlet 10. The pressure or partial vacuum in the upper part of the drier may act through a diaphragm valve to control the outlet or the supply of heat to the air heaters. The shaft may be divided horizontally into two and the grain allowed to fall in a narrow ring from one part to the other, and air is blown across this ring to remove impurities, which are drawn by a second fan to a settling chamber. Discharge of grain may be regulated by raising or lowering a cylinder placed over the rotary sweeps, or by rotation of an apertured cylinder, the position of which is shown by a gauge. The sweeps may be mounted in a frame hinged to the end of the shaft. Specification 303.572, [Class 34 (ii)], is referred to.
