Abstract

Floor coverings are made by steps including incorporating substantially solvent-free chlorinated rubber containing more than 60 per cent of chlorine with more than 55 per cent of a plasticiser therefor, calculated on the weight of the chlorinated rubber, the incorporation being conducted at a raised temperature and in the absence of added volatile solvents. Softeners may be added, but the total amount of plasticizer and softener must not exceed twice the weight of the rubber. The chlorinated rubber may have a viscosity of 0,1 to 1,78 c.g.s. units in 10 per cent solution in toluene at 25 DEG C., and may contain a residual proportion-at most 10 or 12 per cent, but usually 2 to 3 per cent-of the volatile solvent associated with it during its manufacture. The plasticizers may be tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, chlorinated sulphonamide, and chlorinated diphenyl. The softeners may be mineral oils, gelled vegetable oils, (e.g. gelled castor oil), chlorinated naphthalene. There may be added fillers, e.g. cork dust, asbestos, wood meal, yellow ochre, oxidized drying oils, linoleum cement, natural or synthetic resins and cellulose derivatives, e.g. cellulose acetate, benzyl cellulose, ethylcellulose. Various methods of incorporating the ingredients are described, and two examples are given.
