Abstract
A composition suitable for use in the manufacture of floor and wall coverings comprises filler material together with a binder comprising (1) an oxidizable vegetable oil having in its molecule at least two hydrogen atoms replaceable by a metal and (2) a substantially non-crosslinked reaction product having in its molecule at least two isocyanate or isothiocyanate groups obtained from a diisocyanate or diisothiocyanate and a polyester, polyesteramide or polyglycol. The binder may also contain vinyl resins (e.g. polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate, and polyvinyl formal, polyvinyl butyral and other vinyl acetals), resins derived from pentaerythritol, phenol-aldehyde resins (e.g. xylenol-formaldehyde novolak resins) and natural resins (e.g. wood resin and dammar and other copal resins). As plasticizers there may be added phosphate and phthalate esters (for polyvinyl chloride), glycollate and sulphonamide plasticizers (for polyvinyl acetals and nitrile rubbers (for phenolic resins). The oxidizable vegetable oils include unoxidized oils, e.g. raw linseed oil, and partially oxidized oils, e.g. blown or gelled linseed or castor oil. Tung oil, rape oil and dehydrated castor oil are also mentioned; animal oils may be used in addition to the vegetable oils. Oils which are unreactive or insufficiently reactive can be made isocyanate group-reactive by heating with glycerol, glycol or other polyhydroxy compound or with an amine or hydroxyamine. The prepolymer can be obtained from a simple diisocyanate or diisothiocyanate and a polyglycol and also trimethylolpropane and/or another aliphatic polyhydroxy compound. In examples the prepolymers are prepared from propylene glycol polymer in one case containing trimethylolpropane and toluylene diisocyanate, stabilized with phthalyl or benzoyl chloride, or from a mixture of equal parts of oleic acid trimer and polypropylene ether diol. Other components of the mixture are in Example (1) gelled linseed oil, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, dioctyl phthalate, tri-xylyl phosphate, lead carbonate, asbestos fibres, whiting and pigments. Alternative ingredients in mentioned other examples are wood rosin, xylenol formaldehyde novolak resin, wood flour, pentaerythritol ester of rosin acid, cork flour, titanium dioxide, lead chromate. The mixtures are blended in a mixer or roller mill, sheeted and heated to give linoleum-like material.
