[Class 110 (i)] To permit the passage of water through a pump when it is not working the sum of cross sectional areas of the radial spaces a<1>, a<2>, between the impeller 5 and the casing 3 is equal to that of the suction and discharge pipes. The impeller blades are tapered so that the area of the cross section of the passages remains constant and is equal to that of the pipes. The top wall of the discharge is inclined upwards to allow the escape of entrained air.
