[Class 92 (i)] To eliminate the undesirable lifting torque (Pd) on the gun carriage when the pressure P of the powder gases is exerted at a distance d from the centre of gravity Sr of the recoiling parts, the axis of the gun bore and the path of the recoil slide converge rearwardly at a constant acute angle alpha which is independent of gun elevation. The arrangement is such that during recoil the pressure P sin alpha on the recoil slide produce a counteracting moment c P sin alpha about the trail spade C and by suitably choosing the angle alpha, the lifting torque Pd can be compensated.
