Abstract

423,855. Brakes. WALKER BROS. (WIGAN), Ltd., Pagefield Ironworks, Wigan, and DANCE, H. E., 6, Alexandra Road, Birkenhead, Cheshire. June 9, 1933, No. 16530. [Class 103 (i)] Brakes for track-guided vehicles on steep gradients and rope-propelled vehicles, and on which the brake may be adapted to be applied on the fracture of rope or draw bar, comprises sledges C having replaceablebrake blocks mounted by hubs D on wheel axles which when released are moved by springs S into engagement with the roadway whereupon the vehicle pivots on the hubs D raising the wheels and the weight of the vehicle is transferred to the sledges and guide means are provided to prevent derailment. In the modification shown, the sledges are raised and maintained raised by a pneumatic cylinder H, pressure air in which is released by handvalves or by a speed-governor R driven from road wheel B and having projections r<4> which at a certain speed operate lever t which fractures glass t<4> in air pipe w. A draw-bar beam M<3> fixed to bogie A<1> to which the draw-rope P is attached prevents derailment. The brake cylinders are supplied from a reservoir through a valve or constricted opening and a smaller reservoir or trickle chamber. The pin p<1> to which the draw rope P is attached may be carried in a spring-controlled part which moves, when the rope breaks, to open a valve or break the glass t<4> to release the air pressure and apply the brakes. In a modification the brakes are held released mechanically by means of bars adapted to be pressed by springs into such a position that slots register with the brake supporting levers and allow them to fall to apply the brake. The bars are held released by levers having spring plungers at the ends engaging in an aperture in the governor casing, and adapted to be released therefrom by a lever operated by the governor. Only one bogey is provided with governor-operated release mechanism, the sledges on the other bogey being released by movement of the sledges on the first bogey through Bowden mechanism. The sledges may be released by hand, by Bowden mechanism. The mechanism may be released by electromagnetic or pneumatic mechanism.
