Abstract

328,946. Bennie, G. Feb. 5, 1929. Skid brakes.-Braking means for the bogie of a suspended vehicle comprises two brake casings k, Fig. 1, carrying the brake shoes n<1>, n<2>, Fig. 5, and connected together by top and bottom distance pieces l<1>, l<2> through which the braking forces are transmitted to the main suspension bracket of the car through top and bottom pivot spindles m<1>, m<2>. The wheels b of the bogie are mounted in side frames a on which is supported a pair of laminated springs d. A member e bridges the two springs and is provided with a ball bearing h which supports a suspension bolt f through springs g. A pair of links i connects the bolt f to a bracket j on the suspended vehicle, the brackat j being provided with spindles m<1>, m<2>, coincident with the axis of the bolt f, and about which it may rotate. Two brake casings k are connected by cross-members l<1>, l<2>, which are provided with holes for the reception of the spindles m<1>, m<2>, and a bracket o supports the casings by means of pivots o<1> carried in the side frames a. Wheels v support the vehicle in the event of the breakage of the springs d. The brakes comprise plungers n<1>, n<2>, Fig. 5, housed in the casings k and adapted to grip the rails c<1>, c<2> through a tension spring u<1>. The plungers are operated by pivoted levers t connected at the ends by the spring u<1>, the weight of the operating gear being supported from the side-frames a by a spring t'. The bottom lever t passes through a slide provided with a pivot r on which is a bellcrank q. One end of the bell-crank is connected by a rod s to the top lever t, and the other end supports a wheel p around which the rope for operating the brakes is passed. A pull on the rope straightens the toggle connecting the levers t to separate the brakes against the tension of the spring u<1>. The levers t, Fig. 8, may each pass through a slide w, the slides being separated by the toggle x, y when the rope z is pulled. The brake shoes may be applied by the pull of the rope or the toggle may be replaced by a cylinder and piston operated by pressure or by electromagnetic means. Specification 191,760, [Class 103 (iv), Railway &c. vehicles, Body details &c. of], is referred to.
