Abstract
423,853. Exercising - apparatns. STRAKER, E. J., 49, Erpingham Road, Putney, TOLLIS, L. J., 3, Mason's Avenue, HAYDON, V., 3, Dorset Buildings, Salisbury Square, and McDERMOTT, T. E., 30, Barkside, Bowes Road, New Southgate, all in London. May 9, 1933, No. 13532. [Class 132 (i)] A dumb-bell or like exercising device comprises spring hand grips adapted to carry a source of electric energy and provided with an induction coil arranged in circuit with adjustable contacts and with variable resistances adapted to be operably controlled through the hand grips and arranged so that self-administration of electricity can be effected and controlled at the will of the user. As shown, the dumbbell comprises two hollow metal bells 1, 2 at the ends of a metal half handle 3 and a half handle 4 of fibre or other insulating material. The half handle 4 has reduced ends 4<a>, 4b extending into the bells 1, 2 and is mounted on the half handle 3 by springs 5 and guide pins 6. A metal plate 7 is secured into the outer surface of the half handle 4 by screws 8, while a contact pin 9 is mounted in the end 4<a> and is connected to a terminal mounted in the end 4<b>, which end carries another terminal connected to one of the screws 8. A resistance coil is carried on insulating supports in the bell 1, together with a spring pressed into contact with the resistance coil by the pin 9 when the half handle 4 is compressed against its springs. One end of the resistance coil is connected to a dry battery 14, the other end of which is connected to a contact adapted to contact with the metal bell 1, disconnection being effected by a sliding insulated stud. The terminals on the end 4b are connected to an induction coil 17 provided with an interrupter 18. A tapping on the induction coil is connected to the metal bell 2. The bells 1, 2 are provided with detachable covers 25, 26, the latter being secured by ball-catches. In a modification, the coil 1 may be controlled by a sliding contact mounted in the bell 1.
