Abstract
423,087. Ball joints. ALFORD & ALDER (ENGINEERS), Ltd., Winch Place, Deacon Street, Walworth, London, and GLOVER, V. A., Standish, Grange Road, Sutton, Surrey. July 30, 1934, No. 22224. [Class 65 (ii)] A ball joint comprises a hollow tubular housing 1 with an integral shoulder 4 and an integral spigot 29 for attachment to one member 30, a ball stud 13 fixed to the other member 25, a perforated bearing member 8 in the housing and against the shoulder 4, the ball stud passing through this bearing member, an adjustable bearing member 14 slidably mounted directly in the housing to engage the ball on the opposite side to the member 8, and a coiled spring 19 located by a concentric boss 16 on the member 14 and bearing against the latter member and a member 20 closing the housing, so that wear between the ball and the bearing members is automatically taken up. In the form shown, the outer surface of the shouldered end of the housing, through which the ball stud passes, is part-spherical in form, and a metal washer 24 of corresponding form carried on the stud is pressed against this surface by a rubber washer 22 to exclude dirt and water from the joint. The closure member 20 of the housing is formed of a metal disc, resting on a shoulder in the housing and retained by turning over the edge of that end of the housing ; it is perforated at the centre for the supply of lubricant to the joint, the member 14 having a corresponding aperture. The spigot 29 is screwed into the end of the tubular member 30, and is secured by clamping a split end of the member 30 about a plain part of the spigot 29.
