[Class 65 (ii).] A universal joint, particularly for the rods of motor-vehicle ignition and other control gear, comprises a socket on one member provided with a peripheral slot to receive a stem connecting the other member with a head which swivels in a block rotatably mounted in the socket.; preferably one part of the slot is enlarged so that the head can be inserted when not in the working position, and the parts are retained together, when working, without split-pins or other means. The joint provides larger bearing surfaces, and permits the use of a larger stem under the head, than a corresponding ball-joint. In. the construction shown, a member 2 of case-hardened steel, internally threaded at 12 to receive the end of a rod, is formed with a socket part having a cylindrical bore 3 and a peripheral slot 5 enlarged at one end 6. A brass block 4, fitting into the bore 3, has a bore 9 to receive a case-hardened steel head 7 on a stem 11 of a member which has a threaded part for attachment to another rod. The joint is assembled by placing the block 4 in the bore 3 of the socket and inserting the head 7 through the enlarged part 6 of the slot in the socket and into the hole 9 in the block 4. As the members are turned to their working position the stem 11 passes along the narrow portion of the slot 5, and the head is prevented from disengagement by bearing against the inside of the bore 3 in the socket member ; the ends of the head 7 are made part-spherical to bear properly inside the bore 3 in all positions. The plane of the slot 5 may be offset from, or at an angle to, the axis of the member 2.
