Abstract

366,261. Tools for stopping and cleaning pipes; joint-making tools. ROWSWELL, P. SALISBURY-, 48, Walton Street, and EVANS, J. M., 12, Glebe Place, King's Road, both in Chelsea, London. Jan. 17, 1931, No. 1622. [Classes 99 (i) and 99 (ii).] In a pipe stopping device of the kind comprising a rubber sleeve 15 which is expanded laterally by axial compression between a plug 16 and collar 13 secured to telescopic members 11, 12 respectively, the latter are made flexible laterally but substantially inextensible and incompressible axially so that relative movement thereof for expanding the sleeve 5 may be obtained by bending them, Fig. 4. Relative movement may also be effected by a nut 21 threaded on the inner member 11 and bearing against a tubular member 17 secured to the outer member 12. The device may be provided with an attachment, Fig. 2, comprising a plate 26, sleeve 22, and securing screw 23 for clamping a fitting to a pipe temporarily while a wiped joint therebetween is being made or other operations carried out. The sleeve 15 may be mounted on a threaded stem integral with the plug 16 and adapted to screw into a hole in a connector 33 on the end of the inner member 11, Fig. 5. This construction allows the stopper to be replaced by a tool 34 for clearing obstructions in pipes, the end of the tool being arrow-shaped with the two points 36, 37 thereof bent in opposite directions. The Provisional Specification describes a tool as above but with the telescopic members 11, 12 constituted by a rigid rod and tube respectively.
