423,029. Air compressors. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH, & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., SIR W. G., FIENNES, M. A. TWISLETONWYKEHAM-, and SWEETSER, E. H., Scotswood Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne. May 24, 1933, No. 15024. [Class 8 (i)] Air compressors with two or more cylinders interconnected by a valve-controlled passage for unloading when a predetermined pressure is attained, are provided with a valve the movable element of which forms parts of the connecting passage. An oscillatory Corlisstype valve or a rotary or axially movable valve may be employed and alternatively a solid valve with passages thereon may be used. The valve axis may be parallel with the axis of the crankshaft and the valve may be disposed substantially tangentially to the cylinder bores. Cylinders 1, 2 have ports 3, 4 adapted to be connected to a transfer passage 5 by a valve 7. The valve carries an arm 8 which engages a control valve 9 movable in the cylinder 10 under the action of pressure in pipes 13, 14 connected to a control casing 11. When a definite pressure is reached the pilot valve 12 is lifted, the member 9 is moved and the valve 7 turned to the unloading position. Simultaneously pressure air flows through the port 18 and acts upon the control of the prime mover. An adjustable needle valve 19 is provided for varying the rate of flow from the pipe 13. In addition the inlet air suction port can be closed simultaneously with the opening of the unloading valve. Instead of unloading all the cylinders simultaneously, they may be unloaded in stages by providing additional pilot valves to operate at pressures other than the normal unloading pressure.
