Regulating compression.-To unload a compressor in steps, the valve of a clearance chamber for one end of the cylinder is first opened then the clearance valve is closed and an inlet valve at the opposite end is held open next the clearance valve is reopened and finally the clearance valve is closed and the inlet valves at each end are held open. The clearance chamber a is controlled by a valve b provided with a spring-pressed piston moving in a cylinder d. The valve is opened by pressure fluid supplied to the front of the piston through a pipe j; and leak h allows the piston and valve to be returned by the spring when the fluid supply is cut off. The inlet valves F, G, can be held open by two fingers K, L, secured to pistons 0, P operated against spring pressure by fluid supplied to their cylinders through pipes W, X. All these pipes receive fluid supply in accordance with the pressure in the receiver E, which is supplied from the compressor and delivers through a pipe k to a cylinder Y containing a ported piston valve which controls the ports in the cylinder leading to the pipes.
