Regulating compression.-Step-by-step unloading is effected by valve-controlled clearance spaces R controlling each end of the cylinder and an inlet valve opener K at each end, a regulator X actuated by receiver pressure opening first one clearance valve then the other, and then the inlet valves in turn. The regulator comprises a piston valve Y controlling the outlet of the compressed fluid through the pipe 1 - - 4 to the clearance valves and inlet valve openers each of which is formed with a piston operated by the fluid against a spring, leak parts allowing the valves to close when the fluid supply is cut off. Where a compound compressor comprises two cylinders, the clearance valve or the valve opener at one end of one cylinder may be connected through a branched pipe from the regulator with the corresponding element at the opposite end of the other to obtain a balance.
