Regulating compression.-A single clearance chamber W is adapted to be placed in communication with either end of the cylinder alternately; the inlet valve may also be held open. In some cases both ends of the double-acting cylinder may be caused to communicate with the clearance chamber at once to complete the unloading. The chamber W is formed in the head at one end, and communicates with the other end through a passage X. The chamber and passage open intothe cylinder through valves b opened against spring pressure by compressed fluid from the receiver E delivered through a regulator Y controlling the supply to pipes 1 - - 4 leading to the clearance and inlet valves; leak ports g, are' provided for the clearance valves. The inlet valves are provided with openers H having fingers to hold the valves open and pistons O acted on by the pressure fluid, and also with leak ports S. The regulator Y comprises a piston valve having passages 5, y each controlling some only of the inlets to the pipes 1 - - 4, the arrangements being such that as the piston moves under increasing pressure, first the clearance valve at one end is opened: then the valve is closed and the inlet valve at the same end opened; next this inlet valve remains open and the clearance valve may be closed and both inlet valves are opened; alternatively both clearance valves may be opened in the last step.
