Abstract
422,400. Valves; cylinders. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland.-(Assignees of Atteslander, E. ; 44, Adlerstrasse, Winterthur, Switzerland) June 26, 1934, No. 18824. Convention date, Aug. 8, 1933. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two - stroke engine with exhaust ports in the cylinder head and piston-controlled air-inlet ports at the other end of the cylinder, means are provided for delaying the supply of air to the inlet ports until after the piston has uncovered a substantial area of the inlet ports, so as to obtain a more even scavenging action. Fig. 1 shows exhaust valves 5, of which there may be four, in the cylinder head, and air-inlet ports 10 to which air is supplied past valves 11 which open automatically or by positive operation after the piston uncovers the ports 10. Adjustable baffles 15 are arranged between the valves 11 and the ports 10 nearest thereto, so as to equalize the flow of air. The closing of the exhaust valves may occur before or after the closing of the ports 10 by the piston. Fig. 6 shows another construction, in which tangential air ports 18 are supplied from a valved pipe 11, the flow of air being equalized by a baffle 16 formed with ports 17 and tips 20 hinged at 21. The sum of the width of the inlet ports 10 is not less than one-third of the inner circumference of the cylinder, and the maximum cross section available for the flow of air to the inlet ports is at least half the maximum cross-section available for exhaust. More than two control valves 11 may be provided, spaced around the cylinder.
