Abstract

421,538. Spring forks. BARTY, C. R., 10, Singlewell Road, Gravesend, Kent. May 16, 1933, No. 14114. [Class 136 (iii)] In a spring fork for motor-cycles of the type mounted on the steering- head c by pairs of links d, d<1>, e, e<1> and supported by one or more main compression springs f, auxiliary tension springs j, j<1> are mounted to extend between the pairs of links and are pivotally connected thereto at points intermediate the pivoted ends of the links. As shown, the end fittings of the tension springs j, j<1> are pivoted to lugs h, h<1> projecting downwardly and upwardly respectively from the links d, d<1> and e, e<1>. The pivotal points of the links and auxiliary springs are so arranged that the rate of increase of the resistance of the auxiliary springs increases progressively to the limits of upward and downward movement of the fork, and that the resistance and the rate of increase of resistance to downward (rebound) movement of the fork are greater than the resistance and the rate of increase of resistance to the upward movement. The ends of the springs j, j<1> may be fitted with screwed spindles for adjusting their tension. The positions of the points of connection of the springs j, j<1> may also be made adjustable by pivoting the lugs h, h<1> to the links and fitting them with screw-adjustment spindles and locking-means. Friction dampers may be provided at the link pivots.
