Abstract
421,170. Regulating liquid-levels. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28, Kingsway, London, and BINNEY, E. A., Shirley, Ilkley, Yorkshire. Sept. 10, 1934, No. 25958. Addition to 397,857. [Class 123 (i)] The arrangement described in the parent Specification is modified to avoid the use of a 3-way valve. A duct connects the filling chamber to the bottom of the intermediate chamber, and passes through and has a valved opening into the lowest or constant level chamber. In the application to a bearing lubricator, the bearing cap 10 includes an opentopped wick chamber 10<a> which is extended to form a constant level oil chamber 10<c> having a part 10<e> provided with a level indicator. This comprises an adjustable washer 11 just below the oil level XX so that a fall in this level results in the disappearance of the oil below the washer. The intermediate chamber 13 carries an upper filling chamber 15, and a U-shaped duct 17, 17<a>, with a valved opening 18 into the chamber 10<c> connects the chamber 15 with the bottom of the chamber 13. A valve 20 is carried by a rod 19 and is held closed by a spring 22 when the removal of the cap 16 permits the rod 19 to rise. The valve may be held open independently by a catch 24. The two chambers 13, 10<c> also communicate by a tube 27 having a levelcontrolling vent 26 as described in Specification 384,858. The level may be adjusted by providing the tube 27 with a bellows or like extensible part as described in Specification 413,554 or by varying the thickness of the packing 25 to raise the chamber 13 with its attached parts. The arrangement of the valve rod 19 and cap 16 ensures that the cap cannot be replaced when the valve is closed. The bearing may be flooded by pouring oil into the chamber 15 when the valve is latched open. Alternatively, this operation may be prevented by modifying the valve so that when the opening 18 is uncovered, some part of the tube 17 is closed.
