Abstract
420,714. Cables. PIRELLIGENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., 343, Euston Road, London, and BISHOP, J. L., 358, Winchester Road, Bassett, Southampton. Oct. 18, 1933, Nos. 28892/33 and 24269/34. [Class 36] A protective screen for a flexible cable, such as a trailing cable, comprises wire strands which are wound about the cable insulation in one direction and applied in two layers which are separated by an intermediate layer of non-metallic, tough and flexible strands which are wound in a direction opposite to that of the wire strands. The two layers of metal strands are so applied that the surface of the cable beneath the screen is completely covered with metal. In the construction shown, the inner tough rubber sheath 4 of a trailing cable is wrapped with wires 5 which are applied in groups of four and with a direction of lay which is the same as that of the cores 2 of the cable. Strips or strands 6 of tough, flexible and non-metallic material, such as textile material, string, whip-cord, rubber or cellulosic material, are applied over, and with an opposite direction of lay to the wires 5. The gaps between the groups of wires 5 are covered by groups of wires 7 which are wound over the non-metallic strips 6 in the same direction as the wires 5. A tough rubber sheath 8 completes the cable. In a modified construction the cores are individually screened.
