[Class 89 (iii)] A stapling device of the desk type comprises means for straightening a slightly deformed staple and for ejecting and cutting-up a badly deformed one. The driver and staple-guiding passage in the head of the device is defined by front and rear plates 101, 120. The latter is formed with an opening 123, the lower side of which has inclined guide surfaces 125, 126. If a slightly deformed staple enters the passage, it is straightened by engagement with the surface 125. If it is badly deformed, it engages the rear surface 126 and is cut into two pieces by the driver and ejected behind the plate 120. The passage below the level of the staple magazine is contracted to a width rather less than that of the staple. The magazine comprises nested channel members 50, 58 between which the staples slide. The plunger carrying the driver 142 is hollow and houses the spring employed for raising the plunger.
