Abstract

Films, threads, and the like of polymerized vinyl compounds are improved as regards their mechanical properties, by stretching them while in a plastic state at an elevated temperature, and allowing them to cool while in the stretched state. Suitable compounds are interpolymerization products of vinyl compounds, mixtures of polymerized vinyl compounds with other polymerized compounds, such as natural rubber. Softening agents may be present, as may also a small amount of volatile solvent or softening agents provided that it volatilizes during stretching. With films or threads of pure polystyrene, stretching is effected at temperature from 70 to 200 DEG C., preferably 90 to 130 DEG C. The stretching may take place either in air, or inert gas, vapour, or liquid. Films may be stretched in the longitudinal or lateral direction. The polystyrene or the like may be extruded in the form of a tube, and the plastic tube blown out by means of an inert gas, and cut up. Examples are given of the production of films from polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, a polymerized mixture of vinyl chloride and acrylic acid, a polymerized mixture of vinyl chloride and acrylic acid methyl ester, with para rubber, and also of the preparation of filaments from polystyrene. Tables are given showing the mechanical properties of the products.
