Abstract

418,268. Unpacking. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO., 132, Birnie Avenue, Spring- field, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Feb. 7, 1934, No. 4009. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1933. [Class 94 (i).] In a wrapping-machine means are provided for forming in the wrapper a tearing strip constituted by a flattened pleat p, Figs. 15, 20, extending around the packet, the end of the pleat projecting to form a tab t and having a printed mark s impressed thereon to draw attention to the tab. The web w, Fig. 1, of wrapping- paper is drawn from a supply reel 22 by rollers 50, 51 past a pleating mechanism comprising a vertical plate 32, Fig. 2, having a slot 48 therein inclined to the direction of feed, a bridge 31 inclined across the width of the web and a blade 45 engaging the web and forcing it into the slot in the plate 32. In conjunction with the sideways movement of the web caused by the inclination of the bridge 31 over which the web passes the blade 45 and slot 48 produce a flattened pleat along the length of the web. The web now passes a decalcomania printing mechanism, Fig. 17, comprising a heated die 146 intermittently projected through an aperture to press the intermittently moved colour tape d against the pleat as it passes over a resilient block 150. The web then passes an intermittently actuated cutter 90, Fig. 1, which severs the web across its width adjacent each printed mark, and is shaped to form the projecting tab on the wrapper which is delivered by guides 92, 93 to a platform 94 where the packages to be wrapped are fed into the wrapping mechanism w.
