Abstract

Heat hardening phenol-aldehyde condensation products which are soluble in drying oils are prepared by condensing with formaldehyde a phenol or mixture of phenols having only two of the positions o-, o- and pto the phenolic group unoccupied and which has at least one alkyl group containing at least 3 carbon atoms or an hydroaromatic group as substituent with or without the addition of a phenol not containing these substituents in the presence of a strong alkaline catalyst which is neutralized after chemical combination has taken place. The products may be worked up with oils such as linseed oil or china wood oil. In examples the following phenols or mixtures of phenols are condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda to give a resinous product which may be worked up with drying oils: (1) tertiary butyl phenol; (2) tertiary amyl phenol; (3) p-cyclohexylphenol with or without p-cresol; (4) p-tertiary amyl phenol, p-cyclohexyphenol and a chlorinated mixture of o- and p-cresol; (5) a crude mixture of p-cresol and o- and p-butyl-m-cresols with or without p-tertiary butylphenol; (6) p-cresol, p-tertiary butylphenol and p-phenylphenol; (7) p-cyclohexylphenol and benzylated cresol; (8) o- and p-cyclohexylphenol. In examples, (9) the liquid condensation product of o-phenylphenol and formaldehyde prepared in the presence of alkali is heated with a condensation product of p-cyclohexylphenol and formaldehyde; and (10) a viscous condensation product of formaldehyde and di-o-cresylolpropane and a fluid condensation product of p-tertiary-butylphenol and heated together. In example (11) p-tertiary butyl phenol is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of triethanolamine. Specification 334,572, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also refers to the use of phenol containing aralkyl substituents and contains examples illustrating the use of a mixture of a xenzyl phenol and p-tertiary octyl phenol or p cumyl phenol. It also refers to the use of phenols obtained by condensation of o cresols and ketones such as methylbutylketone. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
